Whilst sampling the other day, on our man-made surface, we came across these two insects - the White-tailed Bumble Bee Bombus lucorum and the Maybug (Cockchafer) Melolontha melolontha. We team thought the man-made surfaces would produce little in terms of insect specimens - we stand to be corrected!
Excellent! It seems there is more to these manmade surfaces than meet the eye - my closest encounter with one of the lovely Small Blue butterflies was on a newly stripped stretch of tarmac road, along which it was obsessively bobbing, and would not be discouraged from, despite there being some very butterfly-unfriendly smears of hot, wet tar pooling between the clinkery lumps.
